Ledgebrook writes general liability, professional liability and other specialty coverage for midsize businesses with risks that are difficult to place. Wholesale brokers bring those accounts to the Boston company, which said on October 7 that it raised $200 million in primary equity financing co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management.
Speed, not fully automated underwriting, is the pitch behind Ledgebrook’s Blackbird platform. A human underwriter still makes the final call on each account. Before that review, the software turns a broker’s submission into an initial risk assessment and price; Ledgebrook says that work can bring the response time down from weeks to hours.
The company operates in the excess-and-surplus market and sells exclusively through wholesale brokers, not directly to insured businesses. A customer looking for unusual or complex coverage therefore starts with a broker; Ledgebrook supplies the underwriting capacity and decision behind that relationship. Blackbird is designed for that broker-to-underwriter handoff.
Ledgebrook will put the new capital into its technology and further development of Blackbird. The round is slightly more than three times the $65 million Series C that Reinsurance News says it raised in 2025. Ledgebrook also says it is on track to pass $1 billion in cumulative premium written since it began writing business in 2023.
The carrier operation has been developing alongside the software. Ledgebrook says AM Best assigned its carrier, Ledgebrook Specialty Insurance Company, an A- financial-strength rating in August, completing the company’s transition to what it calls a full-stack insurance platform. Its roughly 300 employees include about 80 underwriters and 50 engineers.
Allianz’s involvement has a second track. Allianz Re separately agreed to enter a multiyear reinsurance arrangement with Ledgebrook, apart from Allianz X’s equity investment. Reinsurance shifts some policy risk to another insurer, but the announcement did not disclose the value or commercial terms of this agreement.
