The Boring Company announced a $3 billion Series D on September 9, confirming a financing that earlier reports had described at a lower valuation. Elon Musk’s company designs tunneling machines, builds underground routes and operates Loop passenger services. The new announcement adds a substantial UAE tunnel partnership to a business best known for moving visitors around Las Vegas.
Loop uses electric vehicles to take passengers directly between stations rather than stopping a train at every platform. The company’s service page lists operating Las Vegas locations such as convention-center stations, Resorts World and Encore, and links to ticket purchases. For a visitor traveling between a hotel and an event, the product is a transport service; for the company, building the route and running it are parts of the same operation.
Prufrock is the machinery behind that service. The company designs its equipment to dig while installing tunnel lining, reducing the stop-start sequence of conventional soft-soil excavation. It also describes machines that enter and leave the ground from a transporter, avoiding large launch pits. Those design choices target the preparation and repetitive construction work around each tunnel, not just how quickly a cutting head turns.
Expanding beyond Las Vegas brings different engineering conditions. The company’s Prufrock page identifies a hard-rock variant working in Nashville limestone, while its UAE plans involve another geography and construction program. This makes standardization a practical business question: how much equipment and operating knowledge can transfer between projects without extensive redesign? The machinery, tunnel construction and eventual passenger network all have to fit the location.
The UAE and affiliated investment entities led the round at a $23 billion valuation, with investors including Human Capital, Vy Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Sequoia, a16z and Temasek. Reuters independently reported the financing. The company says the associated UAE partnership includes more than 150 kilometers of underground infrastructure in addition to the previously awarded Dubai Loop pilot. That is planned deployment, not 150 kilometers of completed tunnel.
The capital supports a broader construction and manufacturing operation, but the next evidence will be physical: completed routes that can carry passengers or serve industrial users. Repeating the process in different ground conditions is more consequential than adding another proposed line to a map. The question is whether the company can carry its integrated approach from a working showcase into multiple useful networks.
