The Exploration Company announced a $450 million Series C on September 8 for a business built around getting cargo to space stations and bringing it home again. Its Nyx capsule is intended to serve public space agencies and commercial station operators. The financing remains subject to applicable regulatory approvals, and the planned full-scale demonstration—docking with the International Space Station and returning to Earth—still lies ahead.
Nyx is designed to ride into orbit on a heavy rocket, separate, dock with a station and exchange cargo before splashing down on Earth. The recovered vehicle would then be refurbished for another mission. For a station operator, that means a way to replenish supplies and return material rather than merely sending an object into orbit. The company's product page sets design targets of up to 3,000 kilograms returned to Earth and ten missions per capsule; these are not a record of completed flights.
The company is building several of the systems that make that journey possible itself, including flight software, docking controls and heat protection for re-entry. Compatibility with different launchers is central to the concept: the capsule service would not depend on the company first developing an entire rocket. That separates its near-term cargo business from the much longer task of creating another launch system.
Customers are being pursued through agency programs and commercial cargo agreements. The company says it has more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments, including European Space Agency work and agreements with commercial space-station operators. Commitments are not the same as recognized revenue. Its separate NASA Space Act Agreement concerns technical and safety qualification for potential missions; it should not be read as a NASA purchase order.
Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund co-led the round, with existing backers also participating. Part of the proceeds will advance Storm, a high-thrust engine using oxygen and methane that is intended for a future reusable European heavy-lift rocket. The announced development sequence moves from testing engine components toward a full engine prototype, rather than immediately producing an operational launcher.
Nyx gives the business a concrete near-term test: complete the entire delivery-and-return cycle, then demonstrate that recovery leads to practical reuse. A successful docking alone would not establish a repeat transport service. The demanding part is making navigation, cargo handling, re-entry and refurbishment work together reliably enough for agencies and station operators to plan around the next flight.
