Polaris Electro-Optics builds optical modulators, components that turn electrical signals from computing and networking chips into data carried by light. The company is developing the technology for optical-module makers, hyperscalers and cloud-infrastructure providers building connections for AI data centers, high-performance computers and communications networks. Polaris announced a $50 million Series B on Tuesday to bring its FenGlass platform into production, with its first product launch targeted for 2027.
The workflow begins with a silicon-photonics wafer made at a foundry. Polaris then integrates its proprietary ferroelectric nematic glass onto the finished wafer in a post-foundry step. When an electrical signal is applied, the resulting modulator varies the light passing through it, encoding chip data onto an optical connection. A module maker can incorporate the component into a pluggable transceiver or place the optics closer to the computing package.
Polaris’ commercial pitch is that customers can increase the amount of data carried by each optical lane while retaining an established silicon-photonics manufacturing process. The company says FenGlass modulators operate at sub-volt drive levels and can reach 400 gigabits per second per lane, with the material’s response adjustable across later product generations. It is working with optical-module makers, hyperscalers and cloud-infrastructure providers on pluggable, near-packaged, co-packaged and longer-distance optical designs; the announcement describes these organizations as partners rather than naming commercial customers.
The company says it has independently verified 400-gigabit-per-second-per-lane modulation, completed Telcordia reliability testing and validated compatibility with standard solder reflow. Those results address device performance and packaging, while volume manufacturing remains another step. UC San Diego reported in July 2025 that Polaris was producing prototypes one or two at a time, preparing to test devices assembled by an outside contractor and shipping samples to large hyperscalers for evaluation. Sample evaluation is distinct from a volume order or deployment.
Walden Catalyst Ventures led the Series B. New investors Socratic Partners, Cambium Capital, Knollwood and Hudson River Trading joined returning investors Koch Disruptive Technologies, M Ventures, Rhapsody Venture Partners, Buff Gold Ventures and Blue Sky Capital; Walden partner Andy Kau joined the board. A Form D filed Sept. 4 recorded $49.5 million sold from a $50 million offering, with $500,000 remaining as of that filing. It listed Aug. 21 as the first sale and 10 participating investors, while Tuesday’s announcement described the financing as a $50 million Series B.
Polaris says the proceeds will fund portfolio expansion, product tapeouts, qualification, volume scale-up and engineering hiring at its Boulder and Carlsbad operations. The business test ahead of the planned 2027 launch is whether partners move from sample evaluation and reliability results to qualified production designs on schedule—and whether contract manufacturing can deliver consistent performance across wafers at the volumes data-center networks require.
