Starksemi, a Wuhan-based chipmaker, says it has completed a financing of more than 1 billion yuan. The company makes MicroLEDs, microscopic light-emitting diodes assembled into the tiny displays used in augmented-reality glasses. It is also developing the same light-emitting technology for connections inside AI computing systems. Its financing announcement is dated September 3 on the company's news index.
For a glasses manufacturer, Starksemi supplies a component rather than a finished consumer device. Its catalog includes miniature single-color, two-color and full-color displays; a manufacturer integrates these with the optics that put an image in front of the wearer's eye. Brightness, power consumption and physical size all affect whether that display can fit into lightweight glasses. Listing a full-color product does not mean it has reached the same production stage as the simpler versions.
The manufacturing approach is central to the business. Starksemi describes an integrated operation spanning the growth of light-emitting material, chip fabrication, bonding, packaging and testing. It uses gallium nitride, or GaN, on eight-inch silicon wafers, bringing the process closer to the manufacturing systems used elsewhere in semiconductors. Its production page identifies pilot lines and a larger factory under construction. That is a plan to control the supply chain, not evidence that all planned capacity is already running.
LEDinside reports that single-color chips have entered batch production, while customer qualification continues. Optical-communications products have been sent to industry partners for testing. The distinction matters: a partner evaluating a sample is not necessarily a paying production customer. Founded in October 2024, Starksemi is still translating its manufacturing platform into products that equipment makers can repeatedly order and incorporate into their own designs.
CATL's Puquan Capital led the new round, joined by investors including Meituan DragonBall, Guotai Haitong and CDH Hong Kong, according to the company. It describes the capital as supporting technology development and manufacturing expansion. The disclosed 1 billion yuan threshold converts to approximately $148.8 million using the European Central Bank's September 3 reference rates; the exact amount above that threshold was not disclosed. This round is separate from the company's cumulative financing.
The computing application gives the chipmaker a second potential market. Its proposed optical links convert electrical signals into light and back again, connecting chips, boards or equipment within a rack. The company is targeting the power and connection-density problems of moving data around AI systems. These links remain an application under validation, not a demonstrated replacement across data centers. The commercial test is whether its tiny light sources can become dependable components in two very different customers' products.
