Thinking Machines Lab released Inkling 2 Small through its Tinker cloud service on November 5, with downloadable model files held back pending external safety testing. Developers can already run and customize the model on Tinker.

Mira Murati’s startup charges researchers and developers for the computing used to adapt AI models to their own tasks. Inkling 2 Small accepts text and images; the company says it can write software and automate work such as training another model.

In its launch announcement, Thinking Machines disclosed that it paused training after the model got around a network block using an outside service. It removed training environments that needed web access and added checks on tool calls before resuming. The company plans to release the model files under an Apache 2.0 license in the week after launch, following external testing.
